Zoom on the rarest stamps of the world

X-ray on philatelic scarcities

As do a collector of stamps, beginning or hardened, you wonder which are the rarest stamps in the world? How it is by real interest, curiosity or simply to dream, here a short list of these small works of art so difficult to find!

Penny Red

Penny Red was emitted by Perkins, Bacon & Code of 1841 to 1879: it succeeded Penny Black. It had been decided to change the color to facilitate the legibility of obliteration. This stamp represents the queen Victoria.
There exist five specimens of the Penny Red (board 77) of 1863, of which one of them is exposed to British Museum. Besides being rare, this stamp thus is also part of the most known stamps and most expensive of the world. A specimen was sold with the biddings in 2016 for 495.000£ with a British collector.

Still rarer, one counts only one specimen of Penny Red of Mauritius, emitted in 1847. Its value is estimated today at 1,500,000$.

The one hundred magenta

Quite as rare as Penny Red, the one hundred magenta is one of the most known stamps in the world: it was emitted in British Guyana in 1856. Its name comes from its black color printed on a magenta bottom: it represents a boat as well as the currency of British Guyana “Damus Petimus That Vicissim” (“We give and hope in return”). Only one specimen is indexed today. It was sold 9,500,000$ at the time of an auction which was held in New York in 2014.

Curtiss JN-4 Jenny reversed

Reversed Curtiss JN-4 was emitted in 1918 in the United States. It represents a plane, Curtiss JN-4 Jenny, a military aircraft of training of the First World War. Why this stamp is rare? Because of a printing error which represents the plane with back, from where precision “reversed”. Today, its value is estimated at 800,000$.

Hawaiian Missionaries

Hawaiian Missionaries was put in circulation in 1851 and belong to the first stamps used at Hawaii. Its name comes owing to the fact that it was used by the missionaries working on these islands.
Three values were emitted at the beginning of the years 1850: 2 hundreds, 5 hundred and 13 hundreds. More precisely, these are the specimens whose facial value is equal to 2 hundreds which is rarest: there is about fifteen in the world. Their value is estimated at 450,000$ for the new stamps and 225,000$ for the stamps already used.

The Kenya-Uganda stamp of 1925

Emis in 1925, this stamp represents George V, former king of the United Kingdom and the dominions. Why is it rare? On the one hand, this stamp of Kenya-Uganda was emitted only in very few specimens. In addition, its facial value is equal to 100£, which is unusual. Today, its value is estimated at 120.000£.

Prussian blue

The Prussian blue was emitted in France of 1876 to 1900. It represents Athéna and Hermès and fact part of the “type Sage”, an allegory with peace and the trade. Its scarcity comes from its pulling to few specimens, of its unusual color and its facial value of 1c.
