Banknotes, which draw them?

 Large banknote draftsmen

One handles with the daily newspaper of banknotes, without inevitably wondering which hide behind the drawings which are reproduced on the avers and the reverse of these tickets! And yet, some billetophiles are devoted only to the collection of the tickets drawn and engraved by such or such artist. Here a review of the large banknote draftsmen!

Charles Percier, Germinal draftsman of the 1000 francs

Born in 1764 in Paris, Charles Percier is a figure of the neoclassicism. Architect and decorator, it took part in the creation of banknote 1000 Germinal francs by carrying out the drawing. This last represents geometrical figures as well as divinities (Poséidon, Vulcan, Apollon and Cérès). The ticket of 1000 Germinal francs was created in 1800 for its provisional form and 1808 for its final form. It is the first ticket of Banque de France!

Alexander Zick, draftsman of a ticket of 5 marks and 10 marks

Alexander Zick is an illustrator and German painter born in 1844. It is him who drew the ticket of 5 marks in 1904 as well as the ticket of 10 marks in 1906, two emblematic parts of the movement of the Art nouveau, also called German Jugendstil.

Nicolas Luc-Olivier Merson, draftsman of the tickets of 50 and 100 francs

French painter and illustrator, Luc-Olivier Merson was born in 1846. Graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure of the fine arts of Paris, this artist is in particular known to have drawn the tickets of 50 francs and 100 francs, respectively put in circulation in 1928 and 1910. More precisely, the ticket of 50 francs represents a young Mercury (recto) as well as a blacksmith (back). As for the ticket of 100 francs, it puts in scene an allegory at Agriculture, Work, the Trade and Fortune.

Alfons Mucha, draftsman of the tickets of 10,50,100 Kč…

Alfons Mucha is an illustrator, a painter, a poster artist and an emblematic decorator of the art nouveau. Born in 1860 in the Empire from Austria, it drew many banknotes: 10 korun (1927), 50 korun (1929), 500 korun (1929), 5000 korun (1920), etc the korun indicate the Czech crown.

Me hamed Issiakhem, draftsman of many Algerian banknotes

Me hamed Issiakhem was born in Algeria in 1928. Formed at the University of the fine arts of Algiers, he is recognized as being one of the founders of modern painting in Algeria. This artist in particular drew a ticket of 5 dinars emitted in 1970: this last represents a Tuareg combatant with the recto as well as a fennec and the desert with the back.

Roger Pfund, draftsman of the last series of the tickets in francs

Born in 1943 in Switzerland, Roger Pfund works as graphic designer, designer and painter. He is known to have drawn banknotes in francs which preceded the arrival by the euro. Those represent famous men such as Saint-Exupéry (50 francs), Cézanne (100 francs), Gustave Eiffel (200 francs) and Pierre and Marie Curie (500 francs).

Robert Kalina, draftsman of the first tickets in euros

Born in 1955 in Austria, Robert Kalina works as graphic designer at the central bank of the Republic of Austria. Following a contest carried out by the European monetary institute in 1996, it was selected to draw the first seven tickets in euros introduced in January 2002. This artist chose to propose the European architectural styles, namely the classical architecture (ticket of 5 euros), the Romanesque architecture (ticket of 10 euros), Renaissance architecture (ticket of 50 euros) or the Art nouveau (ticket of 200 euros). The second series of tickets in euros was carried out by Reinhold Gerstetter thanks to a computer software.
